A peaceful tea house in Seoul
Right next to Changyeong Palace (창경궁) is a cozy tea house named “Sa Sa.” Its name comes from an onomatopoeia that mimics the sound of trees brushing against another or rustling leaves, evoking a calm, peaceful atmosphere in an already serene neighborhood. The area’s aesthetic complements that of the palace, featuring tiled hanok-style roofs.
Café Sa Sa stands out with a facade in a lighter-toned wood—likely oak.
The upstairs is where you’ll want to be. You can sit criss-cross on their elevated seating area. There’s also a unique slab of rock on the floor that appears to be another seating space, though it’s a bit ambiguous whether it’s meant to serve as an aesthetic coaster or simply for decoration.
I decided to enjoy some tea and pumpkin pound cake. Though visually pleasing, I’m sorry to report that it’s nothing to write home about. Still, it’s definitely a vibe to sit upstairs and look out at the hanok-style roofs of the neighborhood. During my visit, the patio doors were closed, but I’m sure it would be an amazing experience to sit out there in warmer weather.
I found myself walking in and out of the café, admiring the walkway right next to the palace gates. Then, I went back upstairs to look out over the neighborhood where I had just been strolling.
There’s also plenty of seating on the main floor next to a glowing ambient wall. While it may look appealing, I’d recommend you try your best to take the experience up one floor.
After your time at the tea house, if you haven’t already, you should walk to Changgyeonggung Palace (which I personally decided to skip, lol) or head to Cheonggyecheon Stream, just a few minutes away.
